How Might We Modernize a Retirement Provider’s Digital “Front Door” to Empower a Diverse User Base?
Client: Code & Theory (Agency) // Confidential Fortune 500 - Financial & Insurance Services (Client)
The Challenge
Managing and planning for retirement is often one of the most emotionally charged and stressful financial undertakings in a person's life, leaving many individuals deeply anxious about potential unknowns. The client, a Confidential Fortune 500 Financial & Insurance Services Company, possessed a massive digital repository filled with highly valuable financial education and specialized retirement planning tools. However, their existing website functioned as an intimidating and cluttered barrier rather than a welcoming, accessible "front door" for their diverse user base. The company urgently needed to enhance the overall digital experience to deliver the seamless, intuitive, and supportive interaction that modern consumers expect from a premier provider website. Because of these complex digital barriers, users struggled to build the necessary confidence in their financial projections and felt heightened anxiety when trying to navigate their retirement options on the portal.
The Outcome
The research yielded a definitive roadmap of actionable design opportunities centered on building user confidence and simplifying complex financial pathways. To actively combat user anxiety and foster a sense of security, we recommended highlighting "Lifetime Income" as a cornerstone solution and placing a customizable "on/off track" retirement calculator in a prominent, highly visible position.
Structurally, we recommended a drastic simplification of the site’s information architecture, replacing complex, nested menus with fewer, clearer categories and a straightforward, single-tiered navigation model. To empower a highly diverse user base, we outlined strategies to personalize the digital experience by tailoring content specifically for prospects versus active plan participants, ensuring that information was highly digestible for beginners yet sufficiently detailed for experts.
Finally, we advised the client to provide holistic portfolio guidance (such as easy consolidation and aggregation options) and to dramatically increase transparency around fees and investment performance.
The Approach
To design a platform truly tailored to human needs, noodle executed a robust, multi-method research strategy with Code & Theory to map out how consumers actually approach financial planning and management. We sought to generate a deeply holistic understanding of consumer behaviors, expectations, and emotional triggers, while simultaneously conducting a rigorous usability audit of the existing website. Our methodology integrated four distinct research activities: moderated and unmoderated interviews to capture rich qualitative narratives, observational research to watch users interact with the site in real-time, and targeted Information Architecture testing, including Card Sorting and Tree Testing. This comprehensive mix of qualitative exploration and structural testing allowed us to analyze both the emotional journey of the planner and the physical usability of the platform. By testing the underlying navigation and grouping systems directly with users, we gathered the precise data needed to rebuild the site's structural foundation.
