Approach

The High Impact Practices (HIPs) website, recently transferred to FP2030 ownership, presented a unique opportunity for evaluation and redesign. The approach utilized a user-centered design methodology, involving secondary research, primary research via hour-long Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with experts globally, and collaborative internal alignment workshops. The research aimed to identify opportunities to improve the website’s effectiveness and user experience, focusing on content, design, navigation, and testing the HIPs Navigator concept.

Outcome & Impact

Stakeholders consistently found the core HIPs content (briefs, guides, resources) to be highly valuable, informative, and evidence-based. The main impediments to usability were identified as an outdated design, confusing navigation, and ineffective search functionality. Crucially, the ad-hoc, volunteer-based content creation and translation process negatively impacts timeliness and the overall user experience. The redesign recommendations centered on:

  • Enhancing Inclusivity: Incorporating more engaging, culturally relevant imagery.

  • Improving Discoverability: Streamlining navigation, enhancing search accuracy with advanced filters, and prioritizing the translation of all content.

  • Increasing Practical Application: Adding practical, hands-on tools, implementation guides, case studies, and testimonials to help users apply HIPs in their specific contexts.

The successful implementation of these recommendations will address the challenges posed by the ad-hoc content maintenance, improve content access for a diverse global audience, and ensure the HIPs website maintains its status as a highly valued resource.
