Approach

This project focused on identifying opportunities to develop a "Road Map" tool designed to improve the visibility and utilization of High Impact Practices (HIPs) resources, which were perceived as underutilized due to navigation challenges. The methodology involved secondary research, primary research via in-depth interviews (IDIs), and facilitated design workshops. The resulting design brief required the tool to be digitally accessible, easy-to-use, and intuitive, allowing users to quickly find relevant content based on their needs. Five design directions were explored, including a decision tree and a structural revamp.

Outcome & Impact

The research validated that although HIPs are useful, users struggle with navigation. The intended tool needed to support users in selecting content relevant to their specific contexts and goals, while also providing advanced implementation guidance.

The immediate outcome was a design brief and detailed prototype explorations that provided actionable strategies for developing an interactive interface. Key ideas included:

  • Response-based suggestions: Utilizing a short, interactive question tree to funnel users toward the most relevant HIPs.

  • Elaborate table of contents: Providing a bird’s eye view with quick descriptions, infographics, and links to case studies to improve visibility.

The strategic impact of this foundation was the creation of a framework for a tool that will reduce user effort and cognitive load. By providing instructional guidance and simplifying content discovery, the Road Map is expected to increase the adoption and effective utilization of HIPs resources, particularly for users who influence family planning programs.
