How Might We Guide the Successful Market Rollout of a Beloved Professional Sports Team’s Rebrand while Minimizing the Risk of Alienating Core Fans?
Client: Code & Theory (Agency) // Confidential Professional Sports Team (Client)
The Challenge
A Confidential Professional Sports Team had developed a rebrand of their team identity and needed to assess how this highly confidential creative asset would be received by key audiences before a public launch. The team's ownership and leadership wanted to ensure that they were doing whatever they could in order to uncover underlying brand attitudes and identify any potential "watch outs" or risks of alienation; they needed to balance the opportunity of modernizing the brand, expanding regional appeal, and attracting new audiences against the risk of alienating their deeply loyal core fanbase. It was critical to gather genuine, controlled feedback to guide a successful, strategic rollout that honored the past while building for the future. Without this preliminary check, the team risked deploying visual elements that felt disconnected from their legacy.
The Outcome
The research revealed that while the rebrand's effort was seen as smart and well-intentioned, its success was highly dependent on narrative storytelling to help fans understand the shift. We found that initial skepticism toward the new logo softened with time and exposure, suggesting that careful sequencing and on-field performance would move fans from mere tolerance to genuine pride. However, we also identified significant risks, particularly that staff and core fans perceived the new identity as somewhat disconnected from the team's fiercely competitive legacy and specific roots.
Ultimately, we provided actionable rollout recommendations, advising the team to implement the rebrand delicately by pairing the expressive new elements with legacy-driven communications to nurture existing pride while inviting new fans into the fold.
The Approach
noodle designed and deployed a comprehensive research strategy to gather insights across four key audience segments: fans, non-fans (a growth audience), team legends (former players), and internal staff members. The qualitative component involved in-person focus groups with casual, avid, and season ticket-holding fans, as well as non-fans across multiple states. We also conducted a dedicated focus group with five Team Legends in order to capture their unique historical perspective. Quantitatively, we administered an anonymous survey to dozens of internal staff members familiar with the initiative to gauge internal alignment. This multi-pronged approach allowed us to deeply probe emotional resonance, perceived strategic alignment, and the effectiveness of different design elements.
