How Might We inform Evolving Internal Roles and Enhance Overall Team Alignment and Organizational Design for a Globally-focused Nonprofit with a Distributed Workforce?
Client: Male Contraceptive Initiative
The Challenge
The Male Contraceptive Initiative (MCI) was navigating a critical period of organizational transition as internal roles expanded and the nature of their work evolved. Operating as a globally focused nonprofit with a distributed workforce, they faced the complex challenge of maintaining cohesive team alignment. They needed to ensure staff members were not only unified around their ambitious mission to advance non-hormonal male contraception but also clearly understood their shifting responsibilities. Without proactive organizational design support, there was a significant risk of role confusion and strategic misalignment. The leadership sought dedicated guidance to safely address these ambiguities and establish a more structured collaborative framework.
The Outcome
The engagement successfully produced a tangible blueprint for operationalizing the team's insights and reinforcing their organizational foundation. We helped them establish clear "Collaborative Agreements," which provided practical frameworks for how to tackle highly structured daily tasks alongside more ambiguous, long-term strategic initiatives. Furthermore, the process successfully aligned the team around critical near-term objectives.
By clarifying individual roles and establishing robust communication protocols, the initiative empowered the MCI staff to move forward with renewed confidence, enhanced collaboration, and a unified vision for their groundbreaking work.
The Approach
To address these internal dynamics, noodle designed and facilitated a highly interactive, four-phase strategic engagement tailored to the organization's unique culture. The cornerstone of this process was a full-day, immersive in-person workshop that brought the distributed team together for focused, collaborative problem-solving. During this session, we guided the staff through specialized exercises, including Values Mapping to reaffirm their core mission, Role Mapping to clarify shifting responsibilities, and Ambiguity Mapping to safely address areas of operational uncertainty. This empathetic, structured approach provided a safe space for the team to voice concerns, untangle complexities, and actively co-create their future working model. These activities specifically helped articulate previously unspoken operational hurdles.
