How Might We Align and Empower a Globally-distributed, Remote Team through Ongoing Strategic Planning and Alignment that Balances Operational Rigor with Agile, Field-building Innovation?
Client: Male Contraceptive Initiative
The Challenge
The Male Contraceptive Initiative (MCI)operates in a critically important but historically underfunded and largely ignored public health field: non-hormonal, reversible male birth control. As a highly innovative nonprofit, the organization runs as a virtual, distributed team with employees scattered across the United States, alongside global consultants and partners based in Europe, Asia, and Africa. This vast geographical dispersion makes it difficult to ensure that everyone feels actively engaged, has a meaningful voice in key decisions, and remains fully aligned around their overarching mission. Furthermore, because the organization must drive systemic changes in male contraceptive development, they face the dual pressure of adhering to a strict strategic plan while maintaining the rapid operational flexibility to pivot when new opportunities emerge. To prevent misalignment or organizational stagnation, leadership needed to establish a continuous, trusted cadence of alignment to keep this small, dedicated team unified on their long-term path forward.
The Outcome
The engagement successfully produced a tangible blueprint for operationalizing the team's insights and reinforcing their organizational foundation. We helped them establish clear "Collaborative Agreements," which provided practical frameworks for how to tackle highly structured daily tasks alongside more ambiguous, long-term strategic initiatives. Furthermore, the process successfully aligned the team around critical near-term objectives.
By clarifying individual roles and establishing robust communication protocols, the initiative empowered the MCI staff to move forward with renewed confidence, enhanced collaboration, and a unified vision for their groundbreaking work.
The Approach
To address these complex organizational dynamics, noodle has acted as a trusted strategic ideation and alignment partner for MCI over a continuous, several year period. Rather than executing a series of disconnected, one-off engagements, we designed and facilitated a sustained rhythm of numerous individual, but connected projects, including intensive quarterly workshops and collaborative virtual convenings. These interactive sessions functioned as a collaborative "sandbox" where team members could safely engage in blue-sky ideation, sense-making, and organizational design. By collaboratively mapping MCI's values, roles, journeys, and operational ambiguities, we established a safe space where there was absolutely no hesitation in sharing thoughts openly and honestly. This deeply empathetic, ongoing co-creation process ensured that every internal stakeholder, from leadership to external partners, could actively participate and directly shape the organization's evolving strategy.
