How Might We Modernize the Online Purchase Experience to Attract Direct B2B Technology Customers and Rival Best-in-Class Competitors?
Client: Confidential Global B2B Technology Company
The Challenge
The Data and Devices (DND) business unit wanted to fundamentally rethink its digital purchase experience to better attract and retain direct online B2B buyers. Historically, B2B buyers and design engineers defaulted to purchasing electronic components through third-party distributors. This distributor loyalty was driven by perceived cost savings, established relationships, and the convenience of a "single shopping basket" that allowed them to source from multiple manufacturers on a single platform. In contrast, the client's own website was widely perceived by participants as outdated, clunky, and difficult to navigate, with convoluted search and filtering mechanisms that severely hindered efficient product research. To unlock direct e-commerce sales and drive business growth, the client needed a clear, customer-centric digital investment strategy to simplify the online buying loop and effectively compete with these agile distributor platforms.
The Outcome
The research culminated in a highly strategic, actionable roadmap that identified critical digital investment areas necessary to capture direct online sales and improve customer research efficiency.
First, we recommended a complete find-ability overhaul by implementing a modern, user-friendly website design featuring intuitive parametric filtering capabilities to help engineers easily narrow down vast product selections.
Second, we highlighted the critical need for comprehensive information access, ensuring that up-to-date technical documentation is readily downloadable on the site.
Finally, we advised modeling the online transaction loop after premier distributors by offering competitive pricing, reducing or eliminating restrictive minimum order quantities (MOQs) for online buyers, and allowing seamless reordering of recurring items. We also recommended replacing generic "in process" shipment markers with detailed, real-time order tracking to alleviate post-purchase anxiety and foster long-term brand loyalty.
The Approach
noodle designed and executed a multi-phased qualitative research study to deeply explore the digital purchasing needs, expectations, and pain points of both customers and competitors' customers. We conducted one-on-one moderated in-depth interviews with customers across distinct user segments and non-customers who currently procure competitive products. The research team carefully analyzed participants' end-to-end buying journeys, spanning initial product research, parametric part filtering, cart checkout, and post-purchase tracking. We also benchmarked the client's interface directly against recognized "gold standards" in e-commerce, evaluating how competitor platforms leverage intuitive keyword search, cascading filters, and immediate document access to build user confidence. This holistic methodology allowed us to pinpoint the precise operational, technical, and experiential gaps separating the client's platform from best-in-class market leaders.
