How Might We develop a digital self-service experience that delights B2B automotive customers?

The Challenge
In the fast-moving B2B automotive sector, engineering and procurement professionals operate in highly demanding manufacturing environments where speed and data accuracy are of paramount importance. The client, a Confidential Global B2B Technology Company's Automotive Business Unit, realized that their existing digital tools were failing to meet these modern customer expectations, resulting in significant administrative friction. Users frequently expressed frustration with encountering incomplete product information, outdated technical documentation, and an unintuitive interface that severely restricted their ability to self-serve effectively. This lack of digital integration and reliable self-service features meant that customers had to default to manual order entry and endless rounds of emails, which exponentially increased operational turnaround times and heightened the risk of costly database errors. Consequently, the client needed a comprehensive, strategic framework to optimize their digital customer experience and transform their portal into a highly intuitive, "delightful" self-service ecosystem.
The Outcome
The research successfully bridged the gap between raw customer needs and the client's business capabilities, delivering a comprehensive roadmap to drive platform adoption and unlock immense operational efficiency.
To tackle the critical awareness gap, we recommended enlisting the client's frontline Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) and Account Managers (AMs) to actively promote the dashboard and simplify the onboarding and authentication process. For the platform's future state, we outlined specific UX enhancements to boost self-service, including enabling batch-part searching for up to twenty part number inputs, offering direct sample requests, and implementing smart algorithms to suggest alternative components when stock is low. Structurally, we advised transitioning from individual employee logins to a company-based "global account" framework, ensuring seamless order history visibility and relationship continuity regardless of customer staff turnover.
Finally, we recommended personalizing the interface to display each customer's specific contractual terms (such as payment, shipping, and currency) combined with real-time order tracking to eliminate unnecessary manual inquiries to customer service.
The Approach
To address these systemic usability issues, noodle executed a robust, collaborative hybrid Voice of Customer (VoC) and Voice of Business (VoB) research study. We conducted virtual, in-depth interviews with seven preferred B2B automotive customers across various global regions, alongside eight internal stakeholders representing Product Management, Customer Care, and Digital Marketing. Through these exploratory, one-on-one moderated sessions, we mapped the end-to-end user journey, specifically focusing on how different roles (ranging from design engineers to procurement specialists) navigate product search, quoting, and post-purchase order tracking. We also pressure-tested reactions to their existing account dashboard capabilities and discovered a major gap, as the vast majority of target customers were completely unaware that advanced digital access was even available to them. Finally, we benchmarked the portal against recognized "gold standards" in the industry, analyzing why certain distributors, as well as B2C leaders, excel in providing seamless, intuitive digital search and parametric filtering.
